A double-bladed paddle propelled small narrow watercraft claims the title "kayak". The traditional kayak is called a sit-in with one or more cockpits, each seating one paddler, and a covered deck. Modern boats called sit-on-top" kayaks, eliminate the cockpit and position the paddler on top of the kayak. Other advancements include inflated air chambers surrounding the boat, replacing the single hull with twin hulls, wind sails, fishing rigs, and replacing paddles with other human-powered propulsion methods -such as foot-powered rotational propellers.
